Crazy - Patsy Cline
Song Lyrics / Chart History / Artist Information

  • Written and also regularly performed by Willie Nelson
  • Nelson wrote the song while still a relative unknown...he had yet to begin performing his own material in public, rather, he was writing songs for other country artists
  • Originally recorded and performed by Patsy Cline (born Virginia Patterson Hensley on 9/8/32 in Gore Virginia, killed in a plane crash 3/5/63 at the age of 30)
  • The song was a # 12 hit on Billboard Hot 100 singles chart in 1961, and reached #2 on the country singles chart
  • It also hit #6 on the Adult Contemporary chart
  • Crazy was the third of Patsy Cline's 4 Billboard Top 40 hits, and the 5th song to reach the country singles chart
  • The song as performed by Patsy Cline is ranked at # 85 on Rolling Stone Magazine's list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time, which is admittedly an extremely flawed list, but it does demonstrate the popularity of the song
  • Nelson met Cline's husband, Charlie Dick, at Tootsie's Orchid Lounge on Nashville's Music Row one evening and pitched the song to him. Dick took the track home and played it for Cline, who hated it, saying it sounded too much like a pop song.
  • Owen Bradley, Cline's producer, loved the song and re-arranged it as the ballad we know today
  • During the recording session Patsy had difficulty reaching the high notes of the song, owing to a serious auto accident that had broken several ribs. It was a week later that she came in to finish the vocal track in one take
  • When she first performed the song at the Grand Ole Opry, she was still on crutches from her accident. She introduced the song by telling the audience, "I had a hit out called "I Fall to Pieces" and I was in a car wreck. Now I'm really worried because I have a new hit single out and its called "Crazy"
  • The song has been a staple is just about every country artist's repertoire for 50 years, and is also considered the most performed Karaoke song of all time
  • Despite the enormous crossover popularity of the song, and the fact that literally hundreds of artists have recorded it, Patsy Cline's version is till the only recording to reach the Billboard Hot 100 chart
  • A 1977 cover version by Linda Ronstadt did manage to reach a respectable #6 on the Country Singles chart
  • In 1973 Patsy Cline became the first female solo artist inducted into the Country Music Hall Of Fame
  • She won a posthumous Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1995
  • In 2001, she was voted by artists and members of the Country Music industry as the all time Greatest Women of Country Music
  • Patsy Cline charted a total of 13 songs into the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, and 20 songs on the Billboard Country Music singles chart, including several that were released after her death

Song Lyrics - Song Title

I'm crazy for feelin' so lonely
I'm crazy
Crazy for feelin' so blue
I knew
You'd love me as long as you wanted
And then someday
You'd leave me for somebody new

Why do I let myself worry
What in the world did I do

Oh crazy,
For thinkin that my love could hold you,
I'm crazy for tryin
And crazy for cryin,
And I'm crazy for lovin you

For thinkin that my love could hold you,
I'm crazy for tryin
And crazy for cryin
And I'm crazy for lovin you.
